1. Sappy? Yes, but it's still one of my favorite baseball movies. In today's world, I could use a little more sappiness. I think it may be the way that it lags in the early innings, as you note, that drags it down for people, but I think this is one of the most underrated of baseball movies. 2. And Lyons actually plays along with it well, with just enough to add to Scully and not too much to interfere.
